7 Ways to Prep Your Apartment for Winter

Keeping your apartment home warm and cozy during the winter season and your utility bills low is easy with seven tips. Here are our recommendations for our residents at North Gate Apartments and any apartment resident nationwide.

1- Let in the Sunshine

Using the warmth of the sun is a great way to save money on your utility bills. When you leave for the day open your drapes and/or blinds so the sun warms your apartment.

2- Change Your HVAC Filter

The best way to save on your air conditioning and heating bills is simple. Change the filer in your unit every month. This makes air intake much easier for your HVAC unit allowing for more efficient heating and cooling with less breakdowns.

3- Safely Use Ceramic Space Heaters

The use of space heaters should be used very cautiously. Never leave them unattended and make sure to keep flammable materials away from them. Keep your thermostat set a bit lower in your apartment. Then use your heater in areas where you need a bit more warmth for a little while, like in your bathroom, or when you come in from the cold.

4- Close Drapes at Night

Keep warmth in your apartment when the temperature drop during the night by using drapes. The fabric insulates your windows and keeps out drafts as well as stops heat from radiating through the glass. Drapes also give you apartment home a warm and cozy feel during the winter. Change our your drapes seasonally with heavy warm looks in the winter and lighter sheer fabrics in the summer for an instant and inexpensive update.

5- Pile on the Blankets

Keep your power bills down and your air less dry by lowering your themostat and using an extra blanket on your bed. Studies show that 68 degrees Fahrenheit is the optimum sleeping temperature. Keeping blankets at the ready in your living area for a quick snuggle by the television also gives you the ability to stay warm while throwing some color and softness in your interior design.

6- Wash in Cold or Warm

Washing your clothes in cold or in warm when the weather is very cold is a great way to save energy and keep your clothes looking better longer. Only wash whites and heavy soiled items in hot which will help save on your power or gas bill and is better for the environment.

7- Winterizing Plumbing

Don't forget if you live in a very cold climate to drip faucets when it is extremely cold, especially on exterior walls. If you feel that something is not winterized in your apartment talk your management before frigid weather sets in.
